William H. "Bill" Purdy

Aug 29, 1934 — Jun 21, 2026

Dublin

Bill slipped the bonds of earth to be with his Lord and Savior on June 21, 2026.

Bill was a devoted husband, proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and stepfather. Family was the center of his life, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved.

He loved baseball and football and coached children in both sports for many years. He was fond of history, movies—especially old westerns—drives through the countryside, country music and politics. He also loved cooking, gathering with family, and doting on the family dog. Bill was a man of strong character who lived his life with integrity, generosity, and quiet strength.

Bill will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends and remembered for his quick wit, endless curiosity, kindness, wonderful sense of humor and generous heart.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Everett “Pid” and Marie (Bogen) Purdy; his beloved grandparents, Alice and Harold Bogen, who raised him; his brother, Everett "Pid" and Marilyn Purdy; and his stepson, Jeffrey Ewart.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, and children Michael and Michele (Murdoch) Purdy; Andrew and Phillipa (Cowan) Purdy; Jim and Lisa (Vittoria) Purdy; and Sarah and T.R. Gross. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jimmy, Scott, Tommy, Alice, Patrick, James, Mackenzie, Madison, Justin and great grandson, Keegan; his stepdaughters, Jennifer Ewart and Julie Ewart Wichlin; along with niece Michelle Purdy Haynes, and nephews Mark and Jeff Purdy, extended family members, and dear friends.

Bill graduated from Upper Arlington High School with the Class of 1952. He attended Miami University and The Ohio State University before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy.

Following his military service, Bill owned several restaurants and bars, including The Place to Be and The Back Door, where he enjoyed meeting people, making friends, and building community.

Bill and his wife, Sue, were married for 37 years and are faithful members of New California Presbyterian Church.

A private burial service will be held for the family. A memorial service celebrating Bill's life will be held later this summer.

Bill's legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friends he made, and the lives he touched. He will be remembered in stories shared around the dinner table, in meals lovingly prepared, on the ballfield, on quiet country drives, and in the warmth of one of his unforgettable hugs.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Capital City Hospice in Dublin, Ohio, for the exceptional compassion, comfort, and care they provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capital City Hospice in Bill's memory.
