Russell A. Young, age 84, of Hilliard, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Kobacker House, in Columbus, Ohio. Born to the late Harry E. and Leila Marie Young, he was a graduate of Big Walnut High School and a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.
Russell Young dedicated his life to serving others. He proudly served the Columbus Fire Department for 30 years and was one of the first trained paramedics in the state of Ohio, helping pioneer emergency medical services aboard the Columbus Heartmobile. Much of his career was spent on Medic 16, one of the city's busiest service areas, where his skill, compassion, and steady presence touched countless lives. Russell was known for his fun-loving spirit and sense of humor. He delighted in playing pranks on his fellow firefighters and paramedics, bringing laughter and camaraderie to those who worked alongside him. Beyond his duties in emergency services, he was committed to public health and safety, teaching CPR classes and serving as a dedicated medical volunteer for the Columbus Marathon.
Away from work, Russell found joy in nature and the outdoors. He loved hiking, camping, and observing eagles in their natural habitat. His appreciation for the beauty of the natural world was something he enthusiastically shared with his children and grandchildren, leaving them with treasured memories and a lifelong love of outdoor adventure.
Russell was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara “Bobbie” Young, sisters Connie Young and Laura Jean Young, brothers Glenn Young and Bruce Young, and his granddaughter Elizabeth Poehler. He is survived by his children: Allen (Cara) Young, Pamela (John) Renner, Kristy (Scott) Poehler, Scott (Sherri) Young, and Rick (Emily) Riley; his siblings: Joan Evans, Leo (Linda) Young, and Jerry Young; grandchildren: Evan (Relliana) Young, Joseph Young, Aaron (Josie) Renner, Jeremy (Elizabeth) Renner, Max Renner, Riley Mayberry, Hayden (Lily) Harrison, Ian Harrison-Poehler, Sean Harrison-Poehler, and Jeremy (Chelsea) Williams; great- grandchildren: Walker Young, Oliver Renner, and Callie Williams; aunt Ruby Smith; as well as many niece and nephews, and other loving family members and friends.
