Maxie “Joe” Clevenger, 89, passed away on March 18,2024 at Trueman Pointe Care Center. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, papaw, and great-papaw. Joe was born on June 8, 1934 to the late Boone and Virginia Clevenger of Hitchins, KY.
He attended Hitchins High School where he played basketball and met the love of his life (Sue), a cheerleader (for the opposing team) during a game against Prichard High of Grayson, Ky. Joe and Sue were married shortly after she graduated from high school and were married 68 years until her death in 2022. Joe and Sue left Kentucky shortly after being married and moved to Flint, Michigan where he went to work for Buick, as a test car driver. They later moved to their lifelong home in Columbus, Ohio where he worked at Westinghouse, International Harvester and South Western City Schools where he retired as a Maintenance Man.
He is preceded in death by his wife (Sue), his brothers (Kenneth, Ralph, Walter, Junior, Curtis, Denzil, Bob and Bill), sisters (Evelyn, Daisy and Kay), son-in-law Steve Weese, and granddaughter Jennifer Clevenger. He is survived by his children: Joni (Mike) Beasley, Joe (Joyce) Clevenger, and Jodi Clevenger. He was affectionally called “Papaw” by grandchildren Benjy (Nicole) Beasley, Adam (Stacey) Beasley, Noah (Abbie) Beasley, Jacob (Kristin Simm) Beasley, Joli Beasley, Josh (Rachel) Clevenger, Megan (Joe) Moore, Skylar (Forrest Farson) Weese, and Max Weese (Emily Greely). He was blessed with 16 great-grandchildren: Braden, Mackenzie, Addison, Abby, Noah, Evie, Amie, Camden, Zackary, Grace, Harper, Ambria, Charlotte, Hudson, Lily and Connor.
Joe was an active member of the Hilliard Church of Christ where he previously served as a Deacon, Elder, and led the team in the construction of the current Worship Hall.
The family welcomes friends and relatives from 11:00am - 12:00 pm Friday, March 29, 2024 at the Hilliard Church of Christ, 4300 Avery Rd. Hilliard, Ohio 43026. Funeral services will follow the visitation and begin at 12:00 pm with Pastor Danny Vanscoy officiating. Interment Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
