Joseph Michael Hissong, known as Mike or Joe, age 71, passed away early February 23, at home in Columbus, Ohio, following a long illness. He was born on June 9, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio, to Joseph M. and Margaret Hissong, the third of their four children. Joe spent his youth in Utica and Columbus. Following a brief time in the U.S. Army, he and first wife Marilyn Wallace started a family, having two children. He later married Linda Meadows of Hilliard and had one more child.
Joe was a truck driver by vocation, spending much of his career at CCX, but spent his final work years as a Facilities Manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a great opportunity to use his skills and offer an extra bit of kindness to patients he encountered. In his personal time, he enjoyed helping family and friends with home improvements, amateur radio as N8WXE, and backyard family cookouts. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. Joe’s life was marked by hard work, humor and warm friendships.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Theresa Smith-Beatty, Janet Conner (Richard), and Bruce Hissong; former wife Marilyn Hissong, mother-in-law Sue Meadows and brother-in-law Rick Meadows.
He is survived by former wife and companion Linda Hissong, son Jason (Amy) Hissong, daughter Charissa (Ron Scaggs) Hissong, son Joshua (Becki) Hissong, sister Debbie Heifner and many nieces and nephews. Joe also leaves his grandchildren Aleah, Anastasia, Ryan, Corie, Andrew (AJ), Justin. He will also be missed by dear friends Ashlee (Adam), Mary (JT and Caileigh), Maurie (Logan and Christina), Randy, Laurie, and Pam.
Joe’s final year required a great deal of assistance to meet his daily needs, and his children extend special gratitude to Linda Hissong for her steadfast commitment to his care, even in the most challenging times. We also extend thanks to the staff of Capital City Hospice for their kindness and care during Joe’s last weeks.
Final arrangements by Tidd Funeral Home. There will be no funeral services. Instead, family will host a private gathering and graveside service at a future date.
