Janice “Jan” Lee Fry Hulhorst, 85, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on October 3, 2026, following complications from a 13-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was just 13 days shy of her 86th birthday.
Jan was born October 16, 1940, in Fremont, Ohio to Wilfred and Rona Fry. She grew up in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School in 1958. She attended Baldwin-Wallace College before transferring to Findlay College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1963.
Jan dedicated her life to education and to helping children learn and grow. Her teaching career began at North View Elementary School in Findlay before moving to the Fremont City Schools as a first grade teacher. She later served as the Director of Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church in Marion. She then became certified in special education and spent 12 years in the MARCA school system, teaching students with disabilities. She later taught first grade, second grade and Reading Recovery with Marion City Schools before retiring in 2001.
She married her college sweetheart, Jim Hullhorst in 1964 and together they had a daughter, Amy Hullhorst Wilson in 1967. Jan was president of her sorority in college, played the piano, sat 1st chair for the French horn and in retirement became a fierce scrapbooker and volunteered many hours in schools and at church.
While Jan took great pride in her career and the many children she impacted, her four grandchildren were the highlight and absolute love of her life. Known as “Memaw”, she treasured her time with Eric, Ethan, Caden and Carter. They will forever carry the memories and love of their grandmother in their hearts.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Rona Fry and her brother Raymond Wilfred (Ruthie) Fry. She is survived by her husband James “Jim” Hullhorst; her daughter, Amy (Brad) Wilson; grandsons Eric (Emily) Wilson, Ethan Wilson, Caden Wilson and Carter Wilson; her niece Lisa (Jeremy) Painter as well as several beloved cousins.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 10:30am-12:00pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home, 425 E. State St., Fremont, Ohio 43020.
