Helen Modlich, age 96, of Hilliard, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Helen Marie Modlich was the very essence of sacrificial love for her family and friends. She impacted the lives of countless others who knew her. She was a major force behind the success of her husband’s business, serving as John’s faithful wife and always deferring her own needs for the flourishing of others.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Magdalene, St. Simon and Jude, and St. Margaret Churches. Helen graduated from Holy Family high school. She spent many winters walking the beach with friends in Ft. Myers. She loved chair volleyball, watching sports, playing bingo, and the occasional visit to slot machines. She volunteered at Mount Carmel Hospital for many years.
She is predeceased by her parents, William and Helen Rains, husband, John, brothers, William (Mary Lou) Rains, Robert (Donna) Rains, and her grandson, Jeffrey King.
She is survived by her children, Jerry (Colleen) Modlich, Daniel (Monica Bell) Modlich, Lynne King, Mark (Helene) Modlich, Kris (Kelly) Modlich, Mary Modlich, Linus (Patti) Modlich, Matthew (Tami) Modlich, and Heide Modlich, grandchildren Meara (Matthew) Scantland, Mitchell (Lindsey) Modlich, Jonathan (Carol)Modlich, Kathryn (David) Van Stone, Margaret (Aaron) Waldo, Jessica (Matthew) Young, Thomas (Charlene) King, Tiffany (Kevin) Cain, Kristi (John Forby) King, Aimee (Dan) Wastell, Meghan Modlich, Kurt (Emily) Modlich, Kelsey Modlich, Stefan “Max” Modlich, Eric Givler, Michael (Katherine) Howard, Andrew (Samantha) Howard, Matthew (Heidee Moreland) Howard, Marie (Jonathan) Lorenz, Nathaniel (Chelsea) Modlich, Laura Modlich, Kyle (fiance Taylor) Modlich, Karly (Rob) Baughn, Kevin (Narnia) Kay, great grandchildren, William and John “Teddy” Scantland, Elodie, Everett, and Rory Modlich, Rachel Modlich, Ryan and Cooper Van Stone, Quinn and Blake Young, Camryn and Landon King, Taylor King (fiance Nate Crawford), McKenzie, Mylee, and Morgan Cain, Laura Forby, Kaleb and Penelope Wastell, Macie Modlich, Lilly and Owen Modlich, Thomas and James Howard, Amelia, Eleanor, and Oliver Lorenz, Lincoln Modlich, Treyjan and Hadrian Baughn, Addison, Alexis and Torben Kay, her brother, Patrick Rains, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Helen’s family will be hosting a visitation on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the Tidd Family Funeral Home, 5265 Norwich Street, Hilliard, Ohio, 43026. The visitation will be held from 4:00PM to 7:00PM.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held the following day, Friday, January 9, 2026, at St. Margaret of Cortona, 1600 N Hague Ave., Columbus, Ohio, 43204. The mass will begin at 10:00AM. Following the service we will go in procession to Wesley Chapel for burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Soup Kitchen, one of her favorite charities.
