Gilbert Hurwood

Jan 7, 1950 — Jul 23, 2026

Gilbert Arthur Hurwood, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 76, in the comforting care of Hospice after a prolonged illness. Born on January 7, 1950, in Rochester, New York, Gilbert touched many lives with his warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit.

Gilbert was the cherished son of Allen E. and Lillian Hurwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judy, and his beloved wife Sondra, with whom he shared 42 wonderful years. Together, they built a loving family, and Gilbert became a devoted stepfather to Cathy Withrow, whom he loved as his own. His family was his pride and joy, particularly his granddaughter, Jalana Caughey, and his great-grandchildren, Colin, Bennett, and LaVonne Caughey, who brought immense happiness to his life.

Gilbert was a man of intellect and curiosity. After receiving his early education in Rochester, he pursued higher learning and earned a Master's degree from the University of Kentucky. For 40 years, Gilbert dedicated himself to his career as a librarian at London Correctional, where he not only found professional fulfillment but also formed many enduring friendships.

A man of varied interests, Gilbert was an active member of Temple Israel and found great joy in traveling to places like Las Vegas and Disney World. He had a passion for music, especially jazz, and loved engaging in lively conversations and playing cards with friends. His warmth and generosity of spirit were evident in every interaction, whether with family, friends, or colleagues.

Left to honor his memory are his sister Suzi and her husband Lenny Kreitzberg, his daughter Cathy and her husband Richard Withrow, and his granddaughter Jalana and her husband Paul Caughey, along with his treasured great-grandchildren.

A graveside service to celebrate Gilbert's life will be held on July 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Galloway Cemetery, located at 6725 Galloway Rd. His family and friends will gather to pay tribute to a life well-lived and to say their final goodbyes.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Research Association in Gilbert's memory. This organization, located in Saint Clair Shores, MI, was close to his heart and supports a cause that continues to touch many lives.

Gilbert Arthur Hurwood's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Though he has departed, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends.
