Gene Hagemeier

November 26, 1932 — December 4, 2025

Gene Mark Hagemeier passed peacefully at home on December 4, 2025 just a few days following his 93rd birthday surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hannibal, Missouri to parents Eva Grace Galbraith and Florenz T. “Hagie” Hagemeier. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol, his parents, twin brother, Dean, younger sister, Joyce, and older brother, Dwight. Gene graduated from Hannibal High School and attended Hannibal-LaGrange College and graduated from the University of Illinois. He served our country in the US Army. Following college, Gene moved to Chicago where he met and married a lovely co-worker named Carol Cadwell. They were married for 63 years. After a brief stop in Kansas City, Gene and Carol moved to Dayton, Ohio and then to Columbus, Ohio. In Columbus, they raised two girls, Ann Lisa and Nancy Gray in a home they built in Upper Arlington. Gene worked for Xerox, The Ohio Company, and several central Ohio banks and retired from Bank One (now JPMorgan Chase). In their empty nesting days, they built a home in The Woods of the Scioto in Hilliard.

Throughout his life, Gene was cherished for his positive energy and his gift for uplifting those around him. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel special, always taking the time to learn about their lives. Gene possessed a deep thirst for knowledge, particularly American history. He began each morning reading The Wall Street Journal and the Columbus Dispatch. His love of learning extended to the classroom where he enjoyed taking P60 classes at The Ohio State University. He loved yardwork and keeping a clean garage! Above all, he treasured any time he could spend with his girls and his grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his two daughters, Nancy DeMuch (Michael), Ann Leidheiser, and his two grandchildren, Brooke and Taylor Leidheiser. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Pat Hagemeier, and three nieces and two nephews.

We are deeply grateful to Gene’s wonderful friends and neighbors who showed Gene’s family such love and support in his final days. A date for a celebration of life service will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to ALZ.org honoring him in memory of his beloved wife, Carol.
