Frank Otto

d. January 17, 2022

Frank J. Otto, Jr. age 98 of Hilliard passed away on January 17, 2022 at Mill Run Care Center, Hilliard.  He was born July 14, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio, son of the Catherine J. (Nowacki) and Frank J. Otto.  In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Tom, and son Stephen.

A life-long resident of Columbus, Ohio, he graduated from South High School in Columbus, Ohio Class of 1941.  He served in WWII in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Mt. Olympus, a communication ship, that participated in the invasion of Leyte and Luzon. As a son of immigrants, he was the first person in his family to attend college and graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S in Engineering in 1961. He worked 30 years for Lucent Technologies (Western Electric/AT&T).

He was endlessly fascinated by the wonders of life and science. His intellectual & scientific curiosity led him to become a professional engineer.  He was a life-long chess player, taught all his children and grandchildren to play chess, delighted in teaching and quizzing his family and friends with math problems, and enjoyed being a local & state science fair judge for 40 years.

As a WWII Navy Veteran Frank stayed in touch with his shipmates into old age.  After retirement Frank & Lynne traveled to many interesting places with his shipmates and their wives for annual reunions.  He enjoyed playing sports and games with his children and grandchildren.  With his unique personality and full head of hair (like his hero Albert Einstein) he was a memorable character loved by many.

He was a member of St. Brendan Church, OSU Alumni Association, Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, and a regular and life-time blood donor to the American Red Cross.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne, of 65 years, daughters Mel Corroto (Mark) and Chris Holton (Mike), grandchildren Tyler Holton, Alex Holton, Andrew Otto (Morgan), Alicyn Otto, and Austin Otto, great-granddaughter Rosalie Mae Otto, and the many new friends and caregivers that made his life special this year at Mill Run Care Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 am Friday, January 28, 2022 at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, 4475 Dublin Rd., Hilliard, OH 43026.
