Eugene was a man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures — a quiet country drive down winding back roads, a fishing pole in hand at sunrise, a lively card night with family and friends, or tending carefully to his garden. His adventurous spirit carried him from hunting trips and foraging walks to the skies as a hot air balloon pilot, while his love for community and tradition kept him deeply rooted at church, at the market, and around the family table.
For decades, he worked as a butcher at the North Market, where his warm personality, steady hands, and familiar smile made him a friend to many. He was a lifelong and devoted member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he was active in Fellowship, Dartball, softball, and proudly served as one of the founding members of the beloved Annual Bratwurst Festival.
A true baseball lover and loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, he never missed an opportunity to cheer them on.
He shared 68 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margaret (Kuhlwein), whose partnership and love were the foundations of his life. Along with Margaret, he is survived by his children: Patty Miller, Susan (Philip) Penix, Bryan (Colleen) Planck, Melinda (Scott) Lahmers, Tim (Brigette) Planck, Brent (Beth) Planck, and Josh (Andi) Planck.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Brittani (Jeff) Farthing, Nik (Taeh) Planck, Andrea (Kristen) Lahmers, Jeremy Miller, Luke Planck, Kyle Planck, Marisa Planck, Collin Floyd, Isabella Floyd, Cody (Morgan) Planck, Greta Planck, Dalton Planck, Justin Planck, and Abbie Planck; and lovingly remembered granddaughter, Courtney Penix, who preceded him in death.
His legacy continues through his treasured great-grandchildren: Ava, Simon, and Maeve Lahmers; Ensley, Easton, and Case Planck; Izzy and Mack Miller; and Vip Planck.
His quick smile, thoughtful soul, and roving spirit touched everyone who knew him. Whether exploring Amish auctions, driving the countryside, sharing stories at church gatherings, or simply enjoying time with family, he made every moment richer through his warmth and humor.
Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created — around dinner tables, ballgames, gardens, country roads, and family celebrations — will live on for generations to come.
There will be a memorial service held in Eugene's honor on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at St. James Luthern Church, 5660 Trabue Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43228. The memorial will be held from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.
