Don Francis Boerner, age 84, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 1st, 2026.
Don was born on January 30, 1942. He grew up in Hilliard, Ohio, where he later raised his own family. As a lifelong member, he served his beloved Hilliard United Methodist Church in many capacities. Don valued God, family, humor, and physical activity. He studied math education at The Ohio State University and stopped just shy of a degree. He enlisted in the US Army in 1966 and played French horn in the Army band in Korea. He later had a long career in banking, with Bank Ohio and National City Bank.
Don was married to the love of his life, Sharon, for nearly 56 years. He was a loving father to their two kids, Kevin and Laura, and bonus daughter, Jeanette. He instilled his kindness and love of humor in his kids.
Don was a high school track star, setting Hilliard High School records in the half mile and mile. He continued distance running for most of his life and completed 4 marathons. Due to health changes later in life, he switched to biking. Eventually, at age 77, he discovered one of the greatest joys of his life: a recumbent trike he lovingly called Herbie. From 2019 until his final ride on December 27, 2025, he rode over 24,000 miles with Herbie. He rode 14 miles most days on Heritage Trail, dinging his bell and waving to all passersby (especially dogs). Don rode in all seasons and weather and found a special peace in snowflakes twinkling in the headlights during quiet night rides. Despite numerous health setbacks, he kept on riding, undoubtedly prolonging his life and adding immeasurable quality to his final years.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Garnet and Martin Boerner, brother David Boerner, brother Paul Boerner (who only lived a few days); and nephews Eric Boerner, Gary Brown, Dan Brown, and DJ Brown. Don is survived by beloved wife, Sharon E. Boerner, nee Voke, son Kevin (Shellie) Boerner, daughter Laura (Jon) Smith, bonus daughter Jeanette (David) Ueberroth, brother-in-law Dean (Linda) Brown; grandchildren Corinne Smith, Hayes Smith, Garret Ueberroth, Emily (Drake) Styer-Reebel, Shawn Pugin; great grandson Jack Reebel; nieces and nephews Troy Boerner, Trent (Lisa) Boerner, Averie Boerner, Joni Adkins, Lisa Niles, Tami (Gary) Brown, Jessie Brown, Mandie Brown, Chris (Lauren) Brown, CJ Brown, Carlee Brown, and Laila Brown.
Don's memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering making a donation to Hilliard United Methodist Church, PO Box 158, Hilliard OH 43026. As Don always said, life is good.
