David Robert Hoyle, better known as “Bob,” a longtime resident of Bradenton, FL and native of Columbus, OH, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026 in Bradenton. His family is devastated by the loss of Bob. However, he lived life to the fullest for every one of his 72 years, and that is what his obituary will focus on. Bob was born on March 16, 1953 to David and Barbara Hoyle in Columbus, OH. He lived on the West Side of Columbus his entire childhood, a fact about which he was very proud. Bob spent his youth playing and running through the woods and fields near his home with his beloved dog, Betsy, and his two younger brothers, Gary and Jimmy. He also spent a lot of time watching his dad and grandfather bowl at the local alley. According to Bob, he loved reading comic books, drinking chocolate milkshakes and spending time with his maternal grandparents, whom he called Bob and Kate. He also developed a love of playing sports at a young age, which he enjoyed through recreational leagues and school teams growing up. Bob was a proud member of the Class of 1971 at Westland High School. He was an amazing athlete who played football and wrestled during his high school years. He was also incredibly smart and was inducted into the National Honor Society at Westland. Speaking of smart, his intelligence, along with support from his family, led him to attend Harvard University after he graduated from Westland. He graduated with a degree in Biology in 1975. After graduating from Harvard, Bob became a high school biology teacher and coach. Coaching became and stayed one of Bob’s true lifelong passions. His teaching career began in Ohio, but eventually he decided to leave the cold weather (which he despised until the end of his days) and move to Florida, where he continued teaching and coaching. After several year as an educator, Bob decided to change professions and become an attorney. He left Florida for a bit to attend law school back in Columbus, where it all started. Bob attended Capital Law School and graduated in 1986. He then high-tailed it back to the warmth and beaches of Bradenton, FL, where he started a career in law that spanned almost 40 years. Even though he retired as a full-time attorney in 2021, he continued to work part-time as a mediator. He loved to tell his kids about how many mediations he had scheduled in a given month. Some of his professional achievements include serving as the Chair of the Executive Council of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Florida Bar and as Chair of the Florida Bar Council of Sections. In addition to those positions, he wrote numerous articles that were featured in various law-related publications and gave several presentations at law conferences and seminars. Throughout his adult years, Bob had many hobbies and enjoyed various activities, including bodybuilding (he even entered a couple of competitions in his 20s), fishing, golfing, bowling, running (one of his favorite races to participate in was the Gasparilla in Tampa each year) weightlifting, cycling (he completed the rigorous Pelotonia ride in Ohio) and sitting in his driveway waiting for neighborhood dogs to walk by so he could give them treats. In 2015, he also became a published author when he finished his book, “How Much Can You Control: A Guide to a Lifetime of Consistent Improvement Through Safe Weight Training.” Bob was also a huge fan of the music of Led Zeppelin. On most Saturday mornings, his kids woke to the sounds of “Stairway to Heaven” blaring from his record player on the porch, and no one was ever allowed to talk during the guitar solo of that song. Ever. If you’ve made it this far, you’re doing great! While Bob worked hard to earn his professional successes, that is not the most important part of who he was. Bob’s most impressive successes were the relationships he cultivated with the people closest to him. Bob loved his family and friends fiercely. His kids and grandkids were his entire world, and he loved and supported them unconditionally. He took a genuine interest in his kids’ passions and activities from the time they were young all the way into adulthood. He coached as many of their youth sports teams as he could, and if he wasn’t coaching them, he was in the stands cheering them on at every single game. This continued in his role as “Bob” to his two grandsons. Not only did he travel from Florida to Ohio as often as possible to visit them, but he also never missed an opportunity to watch their swim lessons, taekwondo classes and basketball games. He even taught himself to play chess so he could try to beat his oldest grandson, Eddie, at it. It never did happen, but hey, he tried. He also always prioritized spending time with his friends. Reminiscing over old memories and making new ones brough Bob immense happiness. Bob was a genuine and caring person with a dry sense of humor and a laugh that lit up his whole face. While that laugh and so many other things about Bob will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved him, he leaves behind an amazing legacy of love, devotion, and kindness that will carry on through his children, his grandchildren, and all who were lucky enough to call him family or friend. When Bob reached Heaven, he was greeted with open arms by his parents, Dave and Barb. Also there to meet him was his granddog, Cooper. He is missed dearly by his daughter, Katie (Ed) and son, Joey (Alyssa), grandsons Eddie and Nate, granddogs Max and Malley, brothers Gary (Mary Sue) and Jimmy, niece Taylor, nephew David and many friends, neighbors and colleagues who he cared for deeply.
