Other than working for the family theater chain, his first job was as Franklin County Sheriff from 1952 to 1954.  He was one of the first to enter the Ohio Penitentiary in the Halloween Night Riot in 1952. It was quite an experience and started a 44-year career in law enforcement. From 1954 to 1956 he was in the U.S. Army.  The first six months he served in Augusta, Georgia at Camp Gordon. Dan was devoted to delving into the family’s genealogy, telling detailed stories of his life as a detective to anyone he met, telling stories about his childhood to his adult children, feeding generations of raccoon families in their back yard, reading, bird watching in his backyard, and keeping his yard full of beautiful flowers.
