Other than working for the family theater chain, his first job was as Franklin County Sheriff from 1952 to 1954.  He was one of the first to enter the Ohio Penitentiary in the Halloween Night Riot in 1952. It was quite an experience and started a 44-year career in law enforcement. From 1954 to 1956 he was in the U.S. Army.  The first six months he served in Augusta, Georgia at Camp Gordon. (This is the same place his great grandfather, Noah Miles, was discharged from after the Civil War.) The next year and a half he served in Salzburg, Austria where his wife joined him in living off post.  His daughter, Kathy, was born there.  After returning to the United States after the Austrian Occupation was over, he joined the Columbus Police.  The next 30 years went by so fast that he could have written many books about his 25 years as a detective.  After his retirement he spent twelve years as a county prosecutor’s investigator. Dan was devoted to delving into the family’s genealogy, telling detailed stories of his life as a detective to anyone he met, telling stories about his childhood to his adult children, feeding generations of raccoon families in their back yard, reading, bird watching in his backyard, and keeping his yard full of beautiful flowers.
