Audrey Matthews

February 15, 1930 — August 11, 2025

In Loving Memory of Audrey Marilyn (Crow) Matthews

Loving Wife, Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Quilter, Amateur Genealogist, and Faithful Soul

Born: February 15th, 1930 in Massillon, Ohio

Died: August 11th, 2025 in Columbus, Ohio

At 95 years young, Audrey Marilyn (Crow) Matthews, gracefully wrapped up a life full of love, devotion, fabric, and footnotes, leaving behind a legacy as rich and colorful as one of her quilts. As an avid amateur genealogist, she understood the importance of a good obituary. So here it goes. We hope you like it Audrey!

Audrey is preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Willis Gene Matthews; her parents, Edith F. (Jones) Crow and John Harvey Crow; and her sister, Kathryn Alma (Crow) Scott. She is survived sons, Ronald (Reenie), Kenneth (Mona Lowry), Mark (Phyllis), Edward (Diana); and daughter, Mary Dinneen (Dana Horton); grandchildren, Susan (Graham) Layburn, Chris (Johana), Nicole, Brandon (Lori), Gary (Ashley), Jennifer (Nick) Johnson, Michael (Gretchen) Dinneen, Erin, Erica (David) Hall, and Dominic. Step grandchildren Byron (Brooke) Horton and Elizabeth Horton, by her brother Richard (Dick) Crow (Joyce), brother-in-law Phil Scott, Sisters-in-laws Nellie Ramey and Margaret Slye and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Audrey was a loving wife, dedicated mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, she balanced propriety with a twinkle in her eye and a fierce curiosity for where her family came from. She traced her family tree back so far her family half-expected Adam and Eve to show up during her searches. Her research filled volumes and she delighted in connecting the past to the present, one ancestor at a time.

Her quilts were many (her projects were more), and though she’s moved on to more heavenly stitching, she thoughtfully left so much fabric behind that her daughter now has a lifetime supply– and a heavenly to-do list.

Audrey retired from Tosoh SMD in Grove City, Ohio after raising her children. Retirement brought more free time. Audrey and Will attended daily mass at Ss. Simon and Jude. After service you could find them with their “church group” for coffee at McDonald’s in West Jefferson. They enjoyed being part of the community as the new church was being built. Audrey and Will enjoyed traveling to many states but a few favorites were Florida with long-time best friends Jack and Rose Sliemers as well as California to visit with her sister Kathryn and husband Phil. Her favorite travel excursion took her to Ireland with her sister and mother to, yes, explore deeper their roots in Gallway, Ireland.

After the death of her husband she found a wonderful home at Stone Oak Retirement Community. She enjoyed being treasurer of the garden club, playing Eucre twice a week and enjoying many community events. Her friends were numerous. Her friends missed her when she needed to move in late May to Danbury - Columbus Assisted Living.

Audrey lived most of her adult life in Springfield and Columbus, Ohio, where she raised her family with quiet strength, unwavering love, and a firm belief in the power of faith. A devoted Catholic, she rarely missed Mass and never missed an opportunity to pray for others. Audrey will be remembered for her warmth, wit, deeply rooted values, and the grace with which she lived every day.

She now rests peacefully in the arms of the Lord, likely organizing heaven’s archives and finally getting all her quilt squares aligned just right.
